Well, the NBA All-Star break is here and the Wizards sit at 17-33, seven games better than they were a year ago at this time. However, this team is no where near the caliber it should be playing at, for obvious reasons. Nevertheless, I feel it's appropriate to give out some All-Star Break awards for a team that needs something to cheer about.
MVP: Antawn Jamison After missing the first nine games of the season, Antawn Jamison has returned to the form of a couple years ago. He currently leads the team in scoring (20.6 points per game) and is second in rebounds (8.9 per game) and steals (1.05 per game). It'll be a sad day for Wizards fans when Jamison is traded away from DC. Hopefully rumors of a possible trade to Cleveland don't come true.
Newcomer of the Year: Randy Foye In all honesty, I was wondering what exactly the Wizards were thinking in giving away their first-round pick for Mike Miller and Randy Foye, but it has proven dividends, as Minnesota used that pick to draft Ricky Rubio, who currently plays in Europe. Miller has had his string of injuries, but Foye has been great for Washington. His 10.2 points per game currently rank third on the team, despite Foye playing only 23 minutes per game. Hopefully Foye will stick around for a couple more years to become a centerpiece of the Wizards franchise.
Sixth Man: Earl Boykins What can you say about Earl Boykins? He's the shortest player in the NBA, but he is often called upon in some of the clutch situations that the Wizards have been in this year. His stats aren't the greatest, as he averages only 7.7 points per game, but Boykins brings that veteran presence off the bench that Flip Saunders has been looking for. Somehow, he's only started one game so far this season. With the team heading towards another dismal finish, look for Boykins to get some more playing time down the stretch.
Best Win: Wizards 92, Magic 91 2/5/10 I know it's the most recent win, but it's the best so far this season. Coming back from down 21 points on the road is a big accomplishment, but when it comes against Orlando it's an even bigger accomplishment. Not only that, but Caron Butler nailed a jumper with 0.5 seconds to go to give the Wizards the win, in impossible fashion. The win marked the second straight against Orlando, the second best team in the Eastern Conference. At least there's one thing the Wizards can hang their hat on come playoff time.
Now that the dust has settled from a hectic couple of months, I expect the Wiz to start playing a little better basketball. Then again, this team will probably look totally different in a month than it does right now.
Today's Wizards Wednesday post comes from FFODC's new basketball consultant, Kevin Burke.
