Today's been quite a day for D.C. sports, eh? Unfortunately not all of the news out of the DMV has been good news. Gilbert Arenas has been suspended indefinitely by NBA Commissioner David Stern. Stern had originally planned to wait until the criminal investigation had concluded before punishing Arenas, and also advised the Wizards to do the same.
Why did the hammer drop early? There's no way that Stern wanted this sort of wound to the NBA's reputation to fester any longer. Arenas' story has been changed, distorted and exaggerated in all corners of the media, and Stern had to take some sort of stance against the troubled star. Not such a good month for Agent Zero so far, but he hasn't done himself any favors. Arenas has yet to show any remorse for his actions (despite admitting it was a stupid move), and doesn't seem to be taking the issue seriously enough.
In this town under his circumstances, that's bad.
Gilbert plays for an organization formerly known as the Bullets. Abe Pollin agreed to change the team's name because of major problems with gun violence in the District of Columbia. This was probably the worst city in America to pull a stunt like this...and no matter what exactly happened, it's not a joke.
What does it all mean for the Wizards? I imagine that Gilberts will be voided as soon as the Wizards have the green light to do so. Beyond that, look for Ernie Grunfeld to try and blow up the roster at the trade deadline. The Caron-Antawn-Gilbert ship has now officially sailed. Get ready for another half-season of infinite sadness DCers, because things aren't getting better in Chinatown anytime soon.
