The Caps didn't have much of an answer in the neutral zone last night, and the Canadiens came away with the regualtion victory in Verizon Center by a score of 3-2. It's pretty typical that a team clogs up the middle of the ice and the Caps fail to adjust in a loss, and this game was no different. In order to excel later in the season, Washington must learn to turn on their "work hard on the forecheck and not be cute" mode much earlier in games. Hopefully games like this are a learning experience...hopefully. Here are my thoughts on the game:
- Two more assists for Mike Green, bringing him to nine points in his last five games. Greener may still be struggling with a different stick (shooting at 4.5% while his career average is 8.8%), but he's dishing the puck well. He's still on pace for over eighty points on the season.
- Five hits for John Carlson in 17:24? I'll take it. It's nice to see a "skilled" d-man that's willing to throw his weight around. Good debut buddy.
- Mathieu Perreualt keeps the train rolling. Hard work + Nice Pass = Goal. Eric Fehr thanks you. How is it that on ESPN, only 0.2% of people own this guy in fantasy? You'd think he'd be a quick, profitible pickup at this point. But I don't play fantasy hockey, so I wouldn't know.
- Neuvirth was tested early, but not often, and he had some back luck on deflections. However, you have to think he was hoping to outduel Carey Price, who's had a rough start to the season (although he's been better lately).
- Add Tom Poti to the injured list. Not good.
- Ovechkin was back to his old form with five shots on net and another five missed, plus four hits. A point would have been nice.
- It was nice while it lasted. Matt Bradley goes back to mere mortal status on the night, with a modest stat line and only :58 of PK time. We still love ya Brads.
Kudos Go To:
Eric Fehr. It's time I give this guy some love. He beats Price on a pretty shot high-glove, and he seems to be on a "Fehr-streak" with points in five of his last eight. I think he's liking his ice time with Perreault, no?
