Over the course of the past two and a half games, it was easy for everyone to say that the Capitals didn't need their Russian superstar, and maybe they didn't for those games, but it sure was great to have him back tonight. Ovechkin came back and showed his anger on the score sheet with two second period tallies to put his team on top.
While we all get a little weary of hearing people refer to the Capitals' division as the "SouthLeast," their dominance to this point in the season among the group. They've now started out 7-0-0, and it hasn't really been close. They've been missing Ovechkin in half of those contests (if you count half of the Carolina game), and have outscored their opponents 30-16 in those games. Here are some notes on tonight's dominating effort in St. Pete Times Forum (where Bruce Boudreau still has yet to lose).
- How many chances did Alex Semin have tonight? He had a strong showing with two nice assists, but he could have potted a hat trick of his own if the puck would have bounced his way.
- Speaking of a bouncing puck, the ice in Tampa looked absolutely miserable.
- Alex Ovechkin came back with a lot of purpose and effort. Also, for those of you all that chirp about Ovi's defense (looking at you Pens fans), he certainly played well behind his own blueline all night (often the first forward backchecking). Maybe goal scoring isn't the only reason he's a +15 on the season so far.
- Shaone Morrisonn sure looked comfortable to me considering his layoff. I really like that Boudreau kept Schultz paired with Mike Green.
- Steve Downie is a complete tool...is this a requirement for every team we play south of D.C.? Pretty nasty shot at Potsy in the last two minutes.
- Eric Fehr went to the bank again, a la Brooks Liach. Gotta love that CCM stick, eh Fehrsie? Curve doesn't matter as much when you're on top of the crease.
- Alex Giroux had only ten shifts. Better, but we'd all prefer zero.
- Boy did Vinny Lecavalier play an undisciplined game. His pirouettes were nice, but his two minors killed any chance his team had of winning.
Kudos Go To:

Semyon Varlamov. Second shutout in the last two weeks...no question who gets kudos tonight. Tap of the stick to his entire team for playing pretty solid defense all night against a fairly skilled group of forwards for Tampa.
