I certainly had to end sometime, right? The Caps finally surrendered their lengthy win streak up in the summer-esque (kidding) conditions of Montreal. Hell, the weather is better there than in Northern Virginia. Anyway, the Caps played like a tired team for two periods, and weren't able to make up a three-goal deficit for the third time in a month. Brooks Laich sure as hell gave it his best effort, notching his first career hat trick, but it just wasn't in the cards tonight.
I'm almost a little relieved now that the winning streak is over. I feel like we all (and especially the players) can take a deep breath and quit grinding their sticks into sawdust every night. Here are a few (and by few, I mean very few...I've posted like 15 times today) thoughts on tonight's overtime loss:
- I'm going on the record as a 'no comment' on the Ovechkin no-goal ruling. That call sure as heck would have been nice back in the 2008 playoffs though...
- The second line was atrocious to start both the first and second periods. At least I'm pretty sure it was them on the ice for both Canadiens' goals. That was the first time the Caps had surrendered goals in the first minute of a period all season...and it happened twice. Yuck.
- John Erskine looked like he was skating in peanut butter. Well, at least thicker peanut butter than usual.
- Mike Green deserves mention for a clutch goal, skating ungodly minutes (over thirty), and two hits to go with a plus two.
- Tom Poti looked pretty bad while he was out there (which has been a bad trend the last few games), and then left the game early. Yikes.
- Nicklas Backstrom couldn't get knocked off the puck even if he left his skate guards on. Seriously.
- Welcome back to the lineup Lainger. Enjoy your four minutes of ice time and one hit.
- I really thought the Caps missed Jason Chimera's energy and speed on the night. The forecheck just wasn't consistent, and having him out there would have definitely made a difference.
Hero of the Night:
First career hat trick...it goes to you Mr. Ironman.
