Free which Alex, eh Caps fans? Tonight is one of those nights that makes life easier for bloggers. The Caps stepped out on the ice without the world's greatest goal scorer and managed to find their way with another world-class talent and world-class effort--for about 57 minutes. Alex Semin was the catalyst for the Capitals energy and they improved to a league-best 6-0 record against their own division.
There's not too much to criticize other than a let down for Semyon Varlamov's near-shutout, so we'll go ahead and throw out our thoughts on the game:
- Even on a night that the Capitals' offense could do no wrong, David Steckel still couldn't break through. It's not like he didn't have chances, but maybe he should lose Alex Giroux's stick and pick up one of Ovi's.
- Fleischmann put one in the net, which was nice to see. It really looked like he wasn't even trying to shoot until the puck left his stick. Nice fake, as long as it was intentional.
- Nick Backstrom continues to step up when needed, with another goal, and even managing ANOTHER 50+% night in the dot.
- B-Mo celebrates the end to Moustache Movember with a three-point night. Boy those legs look fresh.
- Matt Bradley gets a shorty, which seemed to be the backbreaker on the night. It was the first shorthanded goal since Rod Langway's captaincy...ok, ok, that was mean.
- Semyon Varlamov looked great for a majority of the evening, but we were all reminded that this guy is still only 21, and it was obvious that his focus drifted a little bit in the waning moments of tonight's game. However, .929 save percentage and two goals against ain't shabby in a divisional game.
- It's hard for people to complain about hits when you've got guys like Mike "Douche" Duco on the ice. He's now got more than twice as many career PIMs (29) than career TOI (12). That's a type of play that's dangerous and results from a totally clean hit.
- Hate to say it, but these Caps are learning from playing without their most dynamic teammate. They're going out and finding other ways of scoring, and that means good things come May and June.
Kudos Go To:

Alex Semin and his four-point night. It was only the third of his career, and he should have many more to come. AND for the critics (like myself at times), zero PIMs. Good night Sasha. Keep it up man!
