Sorry guys, but I kept hearing McBain, and I couldn't resist using that clip. Between him and Kostopoulos, I feel like I'm living in a 1990s TV world when we play the Canes. Either way, tonight was not the type of game the Caps were looking for after such a dominating performance on Monday. They established a lead, managed an aggressive forecheck, but allowed a few breakdowns to cost them in the end.
Let's just be glad there's no 4-on-4 overtime in the playoffs. Yuck.
Here are a few thoughts on tonight's overtime loss to the division rival Hurricanes:
- The more I think about it, the more I'm expecting Eric Fehr to score a clutch goal when the Caps REALLY need it in the playoffs. No player does more with less in the NHL these days. What a player.
- It was nice to see Joe Corvo break out offensively, but he had some serious head-scratching passes against his old mates. He really needs to round out his game as the playoffs approach.
- Jason Chimera has absolutely earned a nightly sweater in my mind. You can't replace that kind of speed and toughness in the postseason. That being said, can we please work on a breakaway move? That would be nice.
- Think Nick Backstrom picks up his game without Ovi? The four hits say yes more than the two assists. His helper on Corvo's second was a thing of beauty.
- Brooks Laich earned more than one assist tonight. It's sad he wasn't rewarded with more.
- Maybe Carolina will stop complaining about goalie interference if they quit checking our guys into their netminders. Just a thought.
- Eric Belanger looked rough against his old team...in just about every way. -1 with a takeaway and 43% on faceoffs ain't gonna cut it on the second line buddy.
- No player misses Alex Ovechkin more than Mike Knuble when he's out of the lineup. Knuble looked a little lost and seemed to be forcing things a bit. Tomas Fleischmann isn't the kind of guy you want on his opposite wing.
- Solid game for the fourth line overall. They were rewarded for some awesome hustle on Corvo's first goal, along with starting each period on the ice.
- Sarge hung him out to dry on the last goal, but Varly needed to make a big save to steal a win for his team, and he just wasn't able to do that. That's exactly the edge that Theo has on him right now for the #1 spot.
Hero of the Night:
Eric Fehr, for simply earning the team a point. His goal-scoring streak hits three games, and he's now scored a career-high twenty goals on the season. Well done Fehrsie.
