With the Caps only playing their second home game in the past twenty days, Nicklas Backstrom decided to put the team on his goal-scoring back and deliver a win on Christmas Eve Eve. Backstrom has now scored 10 goals in his past 11 games, and pulled into a tie for second on the team with 14 on the season. Not bad for a young Swedish pivot that's really only been known for his playmaking ability, huh? Here are some other comments on the game.
- A seven point effort from your top line usually leads to a win. Tonight is no exception to that.
- John Erskine had seven hits. Guess Hot Pockets knows how the hell he can manage to earn a sweater every night.
- Nice to see Jeff Schultz pick up four blocks on the evening. Sarge doing what Sarge does, and I love him for it.
- Poor Eric Fehr can only do so much with the ice time that's given to him. Tonight he only saw 13 shifts (tied for the fewest on the team), and yet he had two blocks, and assist and two takeaways. He might not kill the stat sheet, but you can't argue that it's for a lack of effort.
- Brooks Laich's slump is driving me nuts. You have to feel for the guy.
- Brendan Morrison's should be deservedly over.
- Is it me, or does Michael Neuvirth see a bunch more shots than Theo or Varly when he gets the nod? He seems to be handling the pressure alright. Goalie depth sure is nice.
- Tough goal for Ryan Miller on Mike Green's knuckle puck, but did anyone sense a bit of fatigue from #30?
Kudos Go To:
Nicklas Backstrom. Sidney Crosby's not the only elite center that's learned a goal scoring touch over the last few months.
