I don't have to get you ready for Caps/Pens. It's a big game, even if it is the regular season. Since most of the details are fuzzy due to the weather, we'll prep you for the game by showing you a little insight on the competition. Enjoy some Pens Photoshops!

Amidst one of the biggest snowstorms in D.C. history this winter, the Caps managed to pull out another firewagon-type game and extend their winning streak to a whopping thirteen games. It was more in the mold of recent games, where nothing seemed sure and the Caps didn't necessarily bring their A game, but a few outstanding efforts lifted them for the evening.

Michael Neuvirth was outstanding, and if it wasn't for Alex Semin ripping off some Luis Mendoza stopping skill (from D2), he would have managed a 44-save effort with only one goal against. Alas, he'll have to settle for first star honors and another big win. Here are a few more thoughts on the baker's dozen:

Teams supposedly play worse as the near the end of a winning streak, and the Caps are probably no exception to that rule. While they've been playing unbelievable hockey for the past four weeks, they haven't always been perfect. The defense was full of holes, there was a parade to the penalty box, and a little goalpost luck, but through all of that, the Capitals extended their winning streak to twelve games. Enjoy it while it lasts.

The best two players on the ice were easily Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. Ovechkin assisted on the team's second goal, scored the third and fourth, and picked up his 500th career point in the process. Backstrom, on the verge of a possible 7-10 year contract extension chipped in with four PRIMARY assists and a nice goal of his own. There's a lot to critique about this one, so let's do it:

Back on Boxing Day, we were all a little disappointed and frustrated when we read this practice note from Tarik El-Bashir over at Capitals Insider:

"Jose Theodore snapped his stick blade when he came off the ice and then offered, 'I just work here' as he pulled off his pads."

Since his mini-tantrum, Theo has gone 9-2-0. We all thought that the Detroit game last month would be his finest point of the season, but tonight Theodore showed that he has plenty more tricks up his sleeve. While the final score was a lopsided 4-1, Theo kept it close through two periods until his offensive buddies woke up. When the dust settled, the Caps had earned a franchise-record 11th consecutive win, and Theodore had earned his career-best eighth straight victory.

Winning streaks are never easy to maintain because teams develop a strange sense of invincibility and paranoia at the same time. The Caps are no exception to this. Through two periods, it looked as if that invincibility would continue. All of Tampa Bay's good shots rung iron, and it seemed that Washington wouldn't have any issues extending their streak to ten games. The Lightning had different ideas.

Before I say anything else, I'd like to thank Krafty and the RocktheRed.net crew for hosting tonight's viewing party at Prime Time in Fairfax. We had a blast watching the game, and the food and drinks were great. We'll definitely be putting something like that together again soon. The Capitals extended their winning streak to nine games with their win over the Florida Panthers this evening. It was rarely pretty, and the win was costly, but two points is two points. They've outscored opponents by 64 goals on the season, and their division lead has grown to a whopping 22 games (which is quickly approaching best all-time status). With tonight's win, they've also captured all ten available points from their division rival, and are one win away from a season sweep...

No matter how well a given professional sports team might be playing, there are always critics and detractors to temper enthusiasm. When the Caps are playing well, those voices tend to come from either side of the Keystone State. We've all heard the "Caps have no Cup" and "it's only January" arguments, but since division realignment, the most common hit on our Capitals is the fact that they play in the NHL's weakest division. Not that I'm a John Buccigross disciple, but I do read his "Mother of all Mailbags," and this particular inquiry bugged me yesterday (and let's give Bucci some credit for sticking up for our Caps with regards to goals against):

John,

You continue to put Washington in Bucci's Power 5. Are the Washington Capitals that good or is it just because they play in a terrible division? They play four of the worst five teams in the East six times each. Put them in the Atlantic or Northeast Divisions to play good teams, and I think their point total would be much lower.

Let's go ahead and ignore the fact that this dude lives less than forty minutes north of Steeltown and just look at his argument. This morning the Caps woke up with a 21-point lead over the second place Panthers, with an opportunity to extend that canyon-sized gap tomorrow night. It doesn't help a strength-of-schedule argument when you look at the Caps' extremely intradivisional record (which stands at 10-2-0) either. For the sake of argument, let's look at the East's top four seeds and how they stack up against their own divisions as well as the others. How do their points break down? How would they do in the other Eastern divisions?

The beat goes on. After a tight-checking goaltending battle through two periods, the Caps turned on the afterburners and skated away from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the final frame. Tonight's performance was a well-disciplined game from a team that's notorious for playing loose hockey, and it was the team's eighth straight win (longest streak since the '80s). Don't look now, but this team might be spoiling us. Let's hope this type of play isn't leading up to a big letdown.

So when John Erskine notches a goal and an assist, your team is on a roll. It's as simple as that. I could be nit-picky tonight and gripe about penalties or Okposo's goal, or some other little things, but there's no way I'm doing that. When your team has won seven in a row, it doesn't do a lot of good to complain. So here's FFODC's feel-good night of the year. The Caps might not win the cup, but fans can't take a winning streak for granted. Especially after those lean years we all had to endure earlier in the decade. Let's get onto some points:

So we've all been creeped out by Bill Guerin's moustache lately...some people have said he looks like a child molester, others have called him a rapist. After a lot of thought, I figured out who he looks like...
