Look for Throwbacks in 2010 E-mail

ruthrowback

I've made my position known on the Virginia Tech football uniforms in the past. I liked the 2004 editions, and more specifically the 2006 all-maroon variation, but the 2008 re-vamped version just wasn't for me. Fortunately for my own tastes, it appears that the Hokies have formally ditched that uniform and decided to rock out in their maroon and white throwbacks for good in 2010. The university and the athletic department haven't commented on the team's apparel at this point, but there were rumors buzzing throughout the spring (specifically over at GC) that Tech would switch to the throwbacks for good this season. To take that rumor a step further, the bookstore is officially peddling these jerseys in full force on its website. There are nine versions of the throwback available for purchase- Logan Thomas, Tyrod Taylor, Dyrell Roberts, Eddie Whitley(?), DJ Coles(?!), Danny Coale, Darren Evans, Ryan Williams, and Barquell Rivers. Better yet, the bookstore is offering them all on sale for $51 currently, so you get a bit of a discount as well (down from $60). Apparently the athletic department wants our fans appropriately outfitted for the Boise State game, don't you think?

Some quick notes and thoughts on the jerseys: the white edition was first worn during the Furman game in 2008 while the maroon edition didn't show up until the Georgia Tech game last season. These uniforms are far more aesthetically pleasing than Nike's previous two uniforms (the "Pro Combat" look and the 2008 strange side color look) in my opinion. The shoulder piping is classic but not over-the-top, and the numbers are simple and clean. Furthermore, the fact that the players don't have names on the jersey screams "team-first" attitude. Personally, my favorite touch is the old 'T' over 'V' look on the collar that screams school history (and I'm a little biased...it's tattooed on my arm).

So, what do you guys think? Is it a good shift? Should we continue to throw money at Nike to give us 8,000 different jerseys to buy each year? Please chime in the comments below!

These are cool but....
I think the Pro Combat all white should be the new away, and i really wanna see a home version of that jersey, because the ones they did for FSU and Ohio St look really awesome, plus the dual color numbers and more modern badass font looks way better than that old style varsity lettering on the throwbacks, i dunno i'll be a little sad if this is true, don't get me wrong i'm gettin a Ry Will jersey in whatever they come out with, and the throwbacks are cool, but not as much asthe Pro Combat

I agree with Rusty...
a home version of the Nike Pro Combat jersey would have been amazing to see. I have no problem with throwback jerseys per se, it's just that we've had so many different variations over the many years... how do you decide which ones to use? Plus, if this is our home maroon jerseys this year, they better bring better luck than they did against GT that awful november day in Atlanta.

Rusty that's a sweet idea to have a maroon version of the pro combat. I bet that would be awesome (especially on a Thursday night). I don't know though...i think the throwbacks are a nice tribute to Beamer's era as a player.

I dont like on the maroon throwbacks that the piping on the shoulders and pant leg are different, just looks weird to me. Also, i liked having an orange jersey to wear. Hopefully we still have some version of that.

I hope we can wear the white helmets again. That was a really cool look.

Gibby I have a feeling the orange jerseys are gone for good. It seems as though we have lost all the games we have played in them (most notably UNC last year). Plus, last year's Thursday night jerseys were dreadful and an embarrassing look. These new jerseys are much more crisp, clean and more professional than last year's.

The jersey's will be the old Throw backs. Cody Grimm let that slip back at the chick-fila bowl in December. He said that is what the players and the recruits wanted to wear. Only question now is if they have the throwback logo on the helmet? I think they will. Look for them to stick with just these jersey's b/c they said they were going away the different looks.

Just no more Oregon of the East
My favorite jerseys were the 2004-2006 with the orange trim on the home jerseys. However, I just want one or two variations. Last year during one stretch we wore 5 or 6 different jerseys in 5 or 6 straight games. I was starting to think that NIKE was using us as the Oregon of the East.
