You can't blame the Hokies for coming out flat in the first half against Miami Sunday. Tech was coming off an emotionally-charged overtime win Thursday, had to travel to Miami a day early on Friday due to snow, and faced a well-rested team that hadn't played since Tuesday.
Despite all that plus a 17-point halftime deficit, the Hokies made a game of it, but still fell to the Hurricanes 82-75. Miami (16-5, 2-5 ACC) shot 70% in the first half to open up the 17-point lead that they saw shrink to as low as five in the second half. On the other hand, the Hokies (16-4, 3-3 ACC) started poorly for the second consecutive game to find themselves in a double-digit deficit.
A big beneficiary to Miami's offensive outburst was their success behind the arc. The 'Canes lead the ACC with eight three-pointers per game, and nailed nine in this one, many of which killed some Hokie runs in the second half.
Tech's main run came in the middle of the second half after the Hokies found themselves down 19 at 55-36. The Hokies then went on a 24-10 run to cut it to five with 7:32 to go, but Tech couldn't get any closer. Every time the Hokies got it down to five points, the Hurricanes would respond with a bucket of their own to put the lead back at seven. Every time Tech had a chance to cut the lead down to three, shots just didn't fall.
On the bright side, the Hokies forced 20 turnovers, including 10 steals, seven of which came in the second half. The only problem was that the 'Canes were just hot from the field all day long. Miami ended up shooting 63% for the game, which is tough to beat no matter who you're playing.
Dorenzo Hudson (as I called, again) had another huge game with 22 points and six rebounds to lead the Hokies. Hudson also nailed four of his eight three-point attempts. Jeff Allen also played extremely well for the first time in quite a while, with 19 points and three steals. Malcolm Delaney added 16, despite missing all five of his three-points attempts, while JT Thompson had another solid game with 14 points.
In the end though, the Hokies couldn't stop the outside shooting of the Hurricanes. James Dews had 21, Malcolm Grant had 13, and Durand Scott added 12 to make up 56% of the 'Canes offense.
Tech now comes home for two crucial match-ups with the ACC's elite. UNC (13-7, 2-3 ACC) comes calling on Thursday, while Clemson (15-6, 3-4 ACC) visits Cassell Coliseum on Saturday. Thursday's game with the Tar Heels starts at 9 p.m. and will be televised on Raycom Sports.
Today's Hokie Hoops recap comes from FFODC's new basketball consultant, Kevin Burke. Kevin is a sophomore communication major at Virginia Tech, and his ultimate goal is to become a sports writer or play-by-play announcer. Kevin comes to FFODC from his own blog, Upon Further Review, and will also be covering Wizards basketball as well.
