The game was there for the taking. The Hokies had a chance to knock off the #6 team in the nation on the road, but couldn't push through. Duke proved too tough of a task for the young Hokies (21-5, 8-4 ACC), as the Blue Devils (23-4, 11-2 ACC) won going away 67-55 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Hokies got off to the good start that they needed, but unfortunately couldn't hang on to the momentum. With Tech up 14-11 7:30 into the game, the Devils took over with a 23-9 run to take an 11-point lead. Being the resilient bunch that they are, the Hokies clawed their way back into the game with a 6-0 run to end the first half. Still, though, the Blue Devils had a five-point advantage at 35-30, despite making only one two-point basket and shooting 23% overall.
Tech got back into the game at the beginning of the second half, tying the game at 42-42 and even taking the lead at 45-44. After Terrell Bell's jumper tied the game at 47-47 with 8:42 to go, the Blue Devils asserted their dominance and proved why they're the #6 team in the nation. Duke ended the game on a 20-8 run, keyed by four three-pointers from the "Big Three." When it counted, the Hokies couldn't come through in the biggest game of the season, missing shot after shot.
In the end, it was John Scheyer, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith who killed the Hokies, as the trio combined for 63 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists. Singler did the most damage with 25 points and 10 rebounds, and nailed four of his nine three-point attempts. Smith also had a big game with 23 points and was three-of-six from beyond the arc. Scheyer also had a quality game with 15 points and seven assists and also made three three-pointers. Brian Zoubek also had a huge game on the boards, compiling 16 rebounds, eight of which were offensive.
Malcolm Delaney led the Hokies with a quiet 19 points, but was only 5-of-19 shooting. Dorenzo Hudson added 12 of his own, while Jeff Allen scored eight in limited action due to foul trouble, yet again.
The Hokies now have to forget about the missed opportunity and focus on their next game, Wednesday at Boston College (13-13, 4-8 ACC). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
