69 64
The upsets continued in the night session as Georgia Tech got out to a huge first half lead and help on for dear life in a 69-64 victory. With the win, the Jackets almost assured themselves of a spot in the NCAA tournament.
The Ramblin' Wreck had everything going for them in the first half as they raced out to a 19-point lead before settling for a 16-point advantage at the half. However, the Jackets let that lead slip away rather quickly. Maryland had the deficit down to three multiple times, but couldn't ever get over the top. Despite committing 16 second half turnovers, the Jackets survived as Greivis Vasquez was stripped on a three-point attempt in the final seconds.
Iman Shumpert led Tech with 14 points and came up with the steal on Vasquez to seal the victory. Mo Miller had his best game of the season with 13 points off the bench, while Zachery Peacock added 11 of his own. Derrick Favors dropped in 11 and Gani Lawal finished with seven, as both big men garnered 11 rebounds each.
Vasquez, the ACC Player of the Year, finished with 17 points, despite only making 6-of-21 shots and 2-of-11 from beyond the arc. Landon Milbourne had 15 points for the Terps and Eric Hayes contributed 14 of his own.
With an NCAA tournament bid presumably in hand, Georgia Tech will look to move one step closer towards an ACC Championship and an automatic bid when they take on the upstart NC State Wolfpack in the second semifinal tomorrow around 3:30.
58 52
I knew I should have picked NC State. Let's all behold the power of the infamous red blazer of Sidney Lowe's whose eleventh-seeded Wolfpack are heading to the semifinals after knocking off offensively challenged Florida State 58-52.
The Wolfpack and Seminoles fought through terrible offensive performances, primarily thanks to each others defense. The 'Noles committed 19 turnovers, compared to the Pack's 15, which eventually cost them the game. To go along with poor ball handling, FSU only shot 38.5% against the stingy State defense, which wasn't enough to defeat the hungrier Wolfpack. Neither team really seized control during the course of the game, but it was NC State who was able to hold on to the lead longer and play better defense down the stretch to gain the victory.
Scott Wood was the shooting star for the Pack, as he nailed 6-of-10 shots from beyond the arc to lead his team with 18 points. Javier Gonzalez was also outstanding for NC State, as he finished with 13 points and six assists. Tracy Smith also added 13 points of his own to round out the Pack's players in double figures.
It was a downright awful offensive game for Florida State, as they only managed 24 points in the second half. Solomon Alabi was the only player in double figures for the Seminoles, as he finished with 13 points.
With the unthinkable back-to-back victories, State advances to the semifinal round, where they will take on another red-hot team in Georgia Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 3:30 p.m.
