57 46
Duke got all it wanted from ninth-seeded Virginia and then some in their 57-46 victory Friday afternoon. The Blue Devils didn't play particularly well on the offensive end, but made up for it with outstanding defense.
The top-seeded Devils found themselves in a dogfight, tied at 27 at halftime. Thankfully, for Duke's sake, Kyle Singler scored 10 straight points about halfway through the second half to give the Devils an eight-point lead. The pesky Wahoos wouldn't go away, as they cut the lead to two with six minutes to go, but couldn't contend down the stretch. Duke went on an 11-2 run in the last 6:25, with the only two UVA points coming on Jeff Jones free throws with 25 seconds remaining.
The Blue Devils obviously didn't have their "A" game, or quite honestly their "B" game, but managed to move on. The big three for Duke outscored Virginia by themselves, combining for 48 points. Singler led the trio with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith added 15 points a piece.
The Wahoos only shot 32.9% on the afternoon, including an astounding 0-for-9 performance from Sammy Zeglinski. Jeff Jones built upon his strong play yesterday adding 15 points, while Mike Scott dropped in 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Duke's quest for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament continues tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against the No. 12 seed Miami. Yes, you read that right, the No. 12 seed.
70 65
So much for being assured of a spot in the NCAA tournament. The Hokies came out flat in the second half and the twelfth-seeded Hurricanes took advantage in a shocking 70-65 victory Friday afternoon.
Tech seemed to have the game in hand as they raced out to a 22-12 lead early in the first half, but Miami responded, as they did all afternoon, to get back within 37-35 at the break. The Hokies controlled the lead throughout the majority of the second half but could never break away from the Canes. Instead, Tech went cold shooting and Miami took advantage by scoring the last six points of the game to seize victory.
The Canes win was once again without star Dwayne Collins, but DeQuan Jones filled in for the big man. Jones finished with 14 points and four rebounds while guard Durand Scott led Miami with 17 points. The big reason for Miam's success was their rebounding, as they outrebounded the Hokes 42-29.
After not showing up in the first half, Jeff Allen finished with a double-double for Tech with 18 points and 11 rebounds. On the flip side, Dorenzo Hudson scored 15 points in the first half, but only managed one in the second to finish with 16. The big problem for the Hokies was the absence of Malcolm Delaney, who finished with 7 points on a ghastly 3-of-15 shooting and 0-of-8 from beyond the arc.
The upset-minded Hurricanes now have a chance to knock off the top seeded Blue Devils in tomorrow's first semifinal at 1:30 p.m. With the way Miami is playing now, I wouldn't be surprised if the Canes gave Duke a run for their money.
