Senior day is supposed to be a special one for athletes across the country, so it's understandable that guys want to make as big an impact as possible in front of their home crowd one last time. For Cody Grimm, the taste of success was that much sweeter in Lane Stadium Saturday night, and his Hokie buddies couldn't have been prouder.

Alright…we’re two games into the season. Virginia Tech beat Brown by the score of 69-55 in the first matchup of the year. The Hokies then defeated the University of North Carolina – Greensboro Spartans in the second game by the score of 59-46. Really, what can we take against two teams that have no chance at postseason play, e.g. the NCAA Tournament, the NIT, or the CBI? Well, a lot actually (just to let you Fight for Old DC readers know, I’m ripping off this format from EBJ at the Beer Control Offense) Look out below:

Virginia Tech enters Lane Stadium one final time in 2009 with the goal of 10 wins still within reach. In order to keep those hopes alive, along with sending their seniors off in style, they'll have to get through a greatly underachieving NC State team. Can Tech do what they did just one week ago and light up one of the ACC's weakest defenses? Here are some things to look for against the Pack on Saturday.

One of these things is not like the others...
As I drove down US Route 1 into College Park on Saturday morning, it certainly felt like a typical mid-November Saturday for football. It was a little cloudy, a little chilly, and the landscape was covered in Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange. Unfortunately for Maryland fans, those colors didn’t come from the changing leaves, but from droves of Virginia Tech Alumni descending on Byrd Stadium. Our headline picture stars my good friend Adam, who was the brave Maryland fan amidst a sea of Hokies…that’s got to be embarrassing for their fans. Way to support your team, Adam…

Hokie fans should enter Saturday with a sense of hope and excitement. This week’s matchup with the Maryland Terrapins offers the Hokies an opportunity to do something they haven’t done in quite some time: stomp an inferior opponent on the road.

For the past several years, Virginia Tech fans have been extremely concerned about the prospect of losing defensive coordinator Bud Foster to a head coaching job. Earlier today, the Washington Post broke news that Foster is interested in the University of Memphis vacancy (Tommy West was fired Monday). Like previous seasons, Hokie Nation has begun crafting doomsday scenarios that might or might not come into play. However, over these past few seasons that have seen Foster flirt with Clemson, NC State, Illinois and South Carolina, nobody seems to want to discuss what WILL happen when Foster leaves Blacksburg for good.

Since my career at Virginia Tech began, which coincided with the Hokies' induction into the ACC, Nike has decided to turn Merryman Athletic Center into a chemistry experiment for uniforms. Over that span of time, we've seen the newer piping uniforms, which were a standard for four years. We've also see the one-orange-armed monstrosities, the orange uniforms, as well as the classy white and maroon throwbacks. Needless to say, their experiments have been both hit and miss, but they've certainly been interesting.

Hokie fans have to be happy to see their team back in the win column. It wasn't really ever pretty, and it wasn't really very exciting, but it was a win. Winning heals everything, or in this case, the bruised ego of a frustrated fan base. Hit the jump for thoughts on some game specifics.

Here we sit, our beloved Hokies are floundering at 5-3 (3-2 in the ACC). This is nowhere near where any of us hoped that Virginia Tech would be entering November. There are two roads that this football team can take. One is the downward sloping slide into Boise Bowl land. That road is littered with negativity, anguish and fan frustration. That road involves finger-pointing and self-destruction. The other road is the long climb to an entertaining bowl matchup against the likes of Notre Dame or Tennessee. That road will be filled with hard work, perseverance, a strong team mentality, as well as humility. Tomorrow night begins the Hokies' final journey. Which road will they choose?
